City of Los Angeles Alert: The National Weather Service has forecasted potentially deadly rip currents and large waves this holiday weekend in the beach regions (due to Hurricane Marie). In response, the NWS has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Advisory beginning Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 6:00 AM through Tuesday, September 8, 2026 11:00 PM for beaches in Los Angeles.
Moderate coastal flooding is expected in the Los Angeles area. Large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet with local sets (occasional, larger groups of waves) to 10 feet are expected, resulting in dangerous and potentially life threatening rip currents. During this time, there is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents will be widespread and very strong, potentially pulling swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore. Enhanced beach erosion is expected to occur.
During high tide, flooding of sea water is likely, which will impact areas such as parking lots, beaches, and walkways.
During the Coastal Flood and High Surf Advisory: Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks. Follow advice from local officials. Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
